| After searching in vain for five years for the consumate
game table, I decided to design my own. My goal was to create a
table of such superb craftmanship, beauty, and quality of
materials that it would become a valued heirloom to be
cherished and handed down through the generations.
The game table is 24" by 24" by 24". The table is all handmade and features four games: Chess, Checkers, Backgammon, and Tic tac toe. The woods used are from managed forests: Honduras Mahogany, South American Rosewood, Macasar Ebony from Indonesia, and American Maple. The reversible top is butterflied with resawn quilted Honduras Mahogany on one side while the other side boasts a Checker/Chessboard marquetry with alternating square inlays of flat-sawn maple and rosewood bordered with Ebony. Joinery is a combination of biscuit joinery and dowels. Removing this top reveals the two other games of Backgammon and Tic tac toe and has the addition of quartersawn Mahogany surrounding the Tic tac toe diamonds. "V" grooved trays are located at each end of the board to hold playing pieces. The claw and ball legs are hand carved in one piece. There are two maple and mahogany divided drawers, utilizing rabbet/dado joints and Gabon ebony pins. No screws or mechanical drawer slides are used. Two trays slide out for beverage placement. Two sizes of hand-carved game pieces are included. The finish is hand rubbed with five coats of Bartley's gel varnish and one coat of Black Bison paste wax for a natural luster. The gametable has met my greatest expectations for aesthetics, function, and style.
